I GREW UP FISHING

I grew up fishing from the age of around 2 years old with my grandfather and brothers. We spent our early years catching grunter and other small fish in the Richards Bay harbour and slowly progressed to deep sea fishing, predominantly bottom fishing when I hit my teen years. My passion for game-fishing started when I landed my first Cuda and Sailfish on the same afternoon off Umdloti on my brother Daryl’s 12’6″ Olufsen skivee.

Since leaving school, and after several trips to Mozambique, we started entering competitions and, after a few years of climbing the ladder of success, we won our first Guinjata Species Bonanza in 2007. We have won the main prize there 3 times and have won the Species Section a total of 8 times! I have also enjoyed fishing from a fishing-ski and have won many competitions in this facet of angling as well.

Since as long as I can remember, we have always used Lowrance units on our boats – from the good old trusty Lowrance X65 unit on my grandfather’s old bay cabin boat, to the LMS 240 on our 16ft Kingcat, and then our first colour unit was the old LCX 37.

We now own several boats and run various units from the Elite 4 on my fishing-ski, to the top of the range HDS Gen3 units on our Kingcat F200. The quality and functionality, not to mention the back up and service from Lowrance, has always been top drawer and has helped us find the fish many a time.

WHY I LOVE TO FISH:

I have been involved in Boating my whole life and we have always had Lowrance on our boats. I remember fishing from Pennington with an old paper-type Lowrance. 30 years later, and we’re still keeping up with the latest technology from Lowrance S.A. I started deep sea fishing at 12 years old from Pennington Ski Boat Club. At 16 I started skippering and fishing for Natal. In 2008 I was introduced to Bass fishing, and have been fishing with Protea Angler – Gavin Richardson – for the last 5 years. Gavin and I run a popular money trail series in KZN – it is sponsored by Lowrance S.A. Lowrance finders play a vital role in our fishing and, simply put; if you can’t see it on the screen it ain’t under the boat!

WHY I LOVE TO FISH:

Fishing accomplishments: Winners of the Guinjata Species competition 2007, ’09, ’10, ’11, ’12, ’13, ’14, and 2015. As you can see we only really fish species comps. Started fishing with my Grandfather in Richards Bay harbour at the age of 3. As we grew older we pushed Gramps to get bigger and bigger boats until he eventually purchased a King Cat 16’6 from Z Craft. We had an old Lowrance LMS 240 unit and, after a lot of begging and pleading, Gramps gave in and splashed out on the new LCX 37 (new at that time).

We started going to Guinjata Bay for our December holidays and absolutely fell in the love with the place. It wasn’t long before we noticed how diverse the fishing and diving was up there.

Every year the late Ted Adams would hold a ‘Species Competition’ and I decided to fish the first one with Brad Nicolson. We were going to try take on all the bigger boats on my small 14ft skivee. Brad knew how to whip a spoon with a KP and we did very well that year in the 1 day Bonanza.

Needless to say we were then hooked and fished with my Gramps the next year in the Guinjata Species Bonanza that was held in August. I remember how many big Humpback whales there were that time of year and how different the fishing was to December. We tried our best but with our main focus being on targeting Cuda, I think we only placed 33rd. Back in those days I think there were close to 100 boats that fished the Bonanza!

It was at the prize giving that year that our hunger to learn new fishing techniques started. No sooner had we packed away all our tackle had our minds started running with new ideas, hungry to do better and catch more fish.

On returning to Durban we spent a great deal of time in the different tackle stores chatting to the likes of Brad Arthur and a few of the older guys, trying to pick up on all the latest techniques. Anglers such as Greg Cunniff, Angus Bell and Jeff Blesovsky were at the top of their game and, not only were they masters with the spoons, but they knew how to target species on baits. We tried to gain as much knowledge from these legends as possible.

Combining the new techniques and an idea of what our trusty Lowrance LCX 37 was telling us, we figured that we were on the right track. Years of spearfishing had taught me to distinguish between the different species of fish lighting up our screen and figuring out that a big showing didn’t always mean the jackpot.

Drop-shotting was the new craze in 2005/6 and we decided to give it a go. Learning new techniques but not forgetting the older techniques (like whipping a silver spoon) was going to be a key in doing well.

Most of the new techniques, like drop shooting and vertical jigging, required the crew to find the fish on the sonar firstly, and secondly; get the fish to eat. Having cutting-edge technology in all of their units, Lowrance always gave us the edge and put us on the fish. The detail of the sonar and the ease of use of the chartplotter made life so much easier. When you are fishing hard and pushing your body physically to the max every day, you want to be sure your skipper isn’t putting you in ‘the bush’ but rather in the strike zone every time.

It goes without saying that finding the fish is one thing, getting them to eat is another. This is where having the right crew comes in. Never give up and keep trying different lures, baits or techniques to get that strike. When the fishing is slow, the boats that work hard and know what they are doing tend to shine.

Our passion to fish hard, in almost any conditions, and our love for the sea has meant we spend hundreds of hours on the water. We rely heavily on our equipment, not only to find fish but to get us safely home to our families every time.

We chose Lowrance, not only because they are the best in the industry, but also because of the Lowrance family we have been welcomed into.
